The Solar Sentinel demonstration website features a range of features designed to help turn a local newspaper into a community website which showcases news and encourages reader interaction.
Readers are able to:
- Create profiles with details of their Twitter id and/or blog, as well as any other information they want to include such as their Facebook page. Facebook users can simply use their Facebook account. Other activities on the site link back to their account.
- Comment on stories and blog posts. If they are logged in, their comment will link directly back to their profile, encouraging a sense of ownership of their comments and the site.
- Start and participate in forum threads.
- Add links to the site of their choice.
- Upload photographs.
- Share videos from popular sources such as YouTube.
- Post events, and confirm attendance at events others have posted.
All features can be moderated or simply turned off if required to prevent abuse. Other features could be added, eg a reviews component allowing readers to submit reviews.
The aim is to encourage stickiness - so that readers spend longer on the site - and promote the newspaper brand as being at the heart of the local community, as well as to encourage interaction between readers and journalists.
